Talaybun National Park is situated between Kwuan Doan District and Muang District, Satun Province, with the following adjacent territory
facing Tu Yoh Canal, Tambon Wangprachan, Kwuan Doan District, Satun province
bordering Sadao District, Songkhla province
bordering the Malaysian State of Perlis
facing the Andaman Sea, Indian Ocean

Topography
Most of the area is mountainous with lush forest. Existing lime stone hills which are constantly washed by the underground water results in large cavity or even a large cave such as Toan Din Cave, Pah Deo Cave and Pooyoo Cave. Moreover, the dissolved underground lime stone burrow also result in the sea swamps in the area. The highest mountain in this area is Chin mountain, 756 meters from the average sea water level.

Climate
Satun province is normally affected directly by the South-Westerly wind from the Indian Ocean in May through to October and just when the South-Westerly wind is weakening North-Easterly wind from China will move in. However, since Satun province is situated on the west side of the shore line no direct impact from the North-Easterly wind is found, though, during October through to November, there could be certain amount of rainfall which will start decrease accordingly. During December to March, the weather can be quite dry due to the South-Easterly wind which will cause an increase in temperature during these months.
Average temperature in the area is 27.5 degree Celsius, highest average temperature is 38.9 degree Celsius in April and the lowest average temperature is 17 degree Celsius in February.

Average annual rainfall is 2,280.9 millimeters, with January being the month with lowest rainfall at 7.2 millimeters and September being the month with highest rainfall at 377.8 millimeters.

Flora and Fauna
Vegetation and Wildlife
Types of forests can be divided into 2 main characteristics
Land Forest can be divided into 2 types

  1. Tropical Rainforest – covering most of the area consisting of higher perennials such as Ironwood and Yang and lower perennials (heights of approximately 15-30 meters) such as jack wood, Mahaadroom and Toongfah.
  2. Open Forest and grass fields – most of the grass fields are covered with lalang grass while other common vegetations are Kradoan, Tabak, Croton and Saan.
Vegetations in wet and lowland can be divided into 2 types
  1. Vegetation found in Talaybun fresh water swamps are mainly annuals such as water primrose, Bon, Bakong, and Koodchaang.
  2. Vegetation found in Mangrove forest (along the west region of the National Park) are Mangroves, Proang and Sea Jelutongs.
Wildlife
  1. Surveys indicated that a total of 80 types of mammals are found, 3 of which are conserved wildlife - Pardofelis marmorata, Tapirus indicus and Capricornis sumatraensis. One mammals never before found in the country – horseshoe bat – is also found.
  2. 302 types of birds are also found, most of them are protected wildlife (under Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act B.E.2535) such as roulrouls, white-crowned hornbills, black hornbills, white-bellied woodpeckers.
  3. 59 types of reptiles are found, for example, spiny terrapins, black tortoises, cobras, king cobras, flying geckos.
  4. 28 types of amphibians in the frogs and toads species are found.
  5. Numerous types of fishes, for example, stonerollers and eels are found due to the fact there is a large swamps in the National Park.

Nature Trails
Two Nature’s Attraction Trekking Routes –One is 1.3 kilometres and the other is 600 metres. One Trekking Route – Thaleban National Park to Namtok Yaroi Ranger Station. The distance is 14 kilometres.

Pooyoo Cave

Pooyoo Cave
Pooyoo is a cave similar to a cave in Pang Nga Bay National Park. Located in the southern part of the National Park near Kar Young Mountain and surrounded with mangrove forest. Within the cave, there are stalactites and stalagmites. Transportation to Pooyoo Cave has to be via boat at Tummalung Pier, approximately 9 kilometres away from Satun and 58 kilometres from the National Park Office.

Talaybun Swamps

Talaybun Swamps
A large swamps in the middle of the valley, against Chin mountain range and Wungpra mountain. The total area of this swamp is approximately 200 rais. Freshwater fish and shellfish are very common. Bakong trees are also very concentrated around the swamps where frogs inhabit. Asin Tapirs can occasionally be seen drinking from the swamp.

Toan Din Cave
Toan Din Cave is 1.5 kilometres away from the National Park Office. The depth of the cave is approximately 700 metres with stalactites, stalagmites and small creek within. Many types of fresh water fish and mining equipment left over from the World War 2 can also be found.

Ton Piew Waterfall
The most beautiful waterfall in the park with a good year round water supply. The falls are 10 km north of headquaters, signposted from the road a track leads a further 3km to the waterfalls. These falls are much quieter and usually a secluded pool can be found even on a busy day.

Wungpra Grass Fields

Wungpra Grass Fields
Large grass fields located in between the mountains in the western part of the National Park where a number of wildlife such as mouse deers, porcupines red jungle fowls and Asian tapirs inhabit. From the National Park Office to this grass fields, it is 8 kilometres to the North then take left road for another 10 kilometres.

Originating from Hua Ka Ming Forest and Chin mountain range. Yar Roay is a 9 storey falls located 6.7 kilometres away from the National Park Office.

     By Car
 

From Bangkok, take Petchakasem Highway to Suratthani then take Highway No. 4 to Rattaphum District, Songkhla province then take Highway No.406 to Kuan Doan District then take the Thai-Malaysian Border Road No. 4184.


     By Airplane
 

There is no direct flight to Satun. The trip by air can be made via Hat Yai Airport then taking a Hat Yai – Satun van to Kuoan Sator junction. The van leaves every hour from 6:00 a.m – 7.00 p.m. at 60 Baht/person. Buses from Hat Yai – Satun leaves every 15 minutes from 6:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. at 38 Baht/person for air-conditioned bus and 35 Baht/person for standard bus.


     By Train
 

Visitors can take a Bangkok-Hat Yai train and get off at the Hat Yai Train Station, continue on to the National Park as by Car.


     By Bus
 

There are buses from Bangkok to Satun daily and the distance from Bangkok to Satun is 973 kilometres or approximately 15 hours. The cost for standard bus is 556 Baht.
